Sandbag training is becoming incredibly popular amongst fitness enthusiasts world over and for good reason; it offers two tremendous advantages over conventional resistance training.

1) Training with a sandbag is one of the BEST ways to develop complete body functional fitness.

2) Constructing a sandbag is an extremely cost effective alternative to a full weights set.

Functional Fitness - What Is It?

Functional fitness relates to our ability to perform physically demanding tasks in daily life such as lifting, carrying and moving heavy objects, tasks which often result in injury or worse.

The problem I have with gyms and those nice comfy resistance machines such as the seated chest press, chest supported rows and seated shoulder press et al is that they actually do very little to prepare your body for the demands of real life.

When you have the body supported by back rests etc, it reduces the bodies requirement to stabilise and function as complete unit, potentially making us structurally WEAKER!

In addition, the types of exercises performed at the gym tend to relate very poorly to anything you may encounter when going about daily business.

For example, when was the last time you ever needed to do a chest press outside of the gym?

It doesn’t happen very often does it?!

The fact is, if you want to improve functional fitness, develop toned; leaner muscles while getting stronger and on a budget, then sandbag training could be just what you have been looking for!

Make no mistake, a sandbag workout is a very unique way of training and can be incredibly demanding while at the same time being great fun!

Due to the lack of comfortable handles to hold onto, hand and wrist strength can be tested to the max resulting in increased strength and hand health.

The awkward shape, size and tendency of the sandbag mass to shift when lifted means that the body has to work hard as nature intended, that being as a functional unit.

The result is a pulse raising, muscle busting, connective tissue strengthening workout that carries tremendous benefits in every day life!
